| "The sun never sets
on the British Empire" holds true even today in Gibraltar. Gibraltar, in its
entirety, spans only a stretch of about 6 sq kms along Spain’s Mediterranean
shoreline but is vitally important to the United Kingdom as a defense base. The country is
strategically the only point of entry to the Mediterranean Sea from the Atlantic Ocean.
The famed Rock of Gibraltar is a limestone and shale ridge across the Iberian Peninsula. |

| It has
immense stature – standing sheer and very tall at 426 metres. When you are travelling
along the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean, the Rock of Gibraltar may look like a
chain of untamed, insurmountable cliffs. On the western side, it appears less hostile with
a sloping gradient and human habitation till about 90 metres up the rock. |
