Yercaud is a small, unpretentious hill station
in the Shevaroy Hills near Salem in Tamilnadu, a wonderful getaway from the hustle and
bustle of city life. You can while away the hours walking along little trodden paths and
sauntering through the forests, relaxing in grassy woods or boating on the placid lake.
The little town of Yercaud has an untouched landscape and a graceful, unhurried charm.
Yercaud is surrounded by coffee plantations and thickly forested hills that are wonderful
for trekking. The town is at a height of 1,500 mt, and the weather is just right for a
pleasant holiday during the Dussehra-Diwali vacations. The drive to |
| Yercaud is as scenic and interesting. Before
the mountain climb begins for Yercaud, you will come across a number of vividly painted
idols just off the road. These are the Aiyanars, the guardian deities of the villages. The
long and winding road up to Yercaud has numerous hairpin bends; keep a bag of lemon sweets
handy to stop those hill-climbing blues, or stop at wayside stalls to pick up some fresh
spices. Finally, you will be greeted by the fragrance of coffee blossoms and the sight of
pretty thatched cottages as you approach Yercaud. Yercaud
is made for long, leisurely walks or a slow ride on the lake in a pedal boat. You can hire
a car or taxi to drive around the nearby sights like Lady's Seat that
overlooks the valleys, or Pyramid Point or Pagoda Point,
with its interesting structure of stones. 7 km from the lake is the Servaroyan
Temple near the lake is also worth visiting, as is the old cave temple nearby.
Other interesting places are Anna Park, Killiyur Falls, Bear's Caves and Cauvery
Peak.
Quiet and serene Yercaud with its laidback grace is bound to bowl you over. You will
return again and again for that tranquil sojourn that this little coffee hamlet is famous
for.
Getting to Yercaud
Yercaud is 190 km from Coimbatore and 237 km from Bangalore. The nearest railway stations
are at Salem (36 km) and the nearest airport is at Trichy (180 km). There are direct
trains from Chennai, Coimbatore and Bangalore. Many buses pass through Yercaud on their
way to Salem. You could drive up to Yercaud by rented car, taxi or bus.
Best time to visit Yercaud
The best time to visit Yercaud is in the cool months from October-November onwards. Though
summers are very pleasant, tourist activity is high. Carry light woollens and sun
protection.

The range of accommodation is limited but there are some decent mid-rung hotels and low
budget rooms at Yercaud. |
