Visit French Guiana
for the absolutely novel experience of travelling right into the interior to where the
thick rainforests open up a whole new, exotic world of nature. Imagine yourself at the
beach in Les Hattes where you can see gigantic leatherback turtles laying their eggs! And
for a different kind of experience, visit the space centre and the Iles du Salut. The
magic of the Carnaval in Cayenne is something youll carry back with you for years to
come.
French Guiana is the
smallest of the Guianas. Part of the South American continent, it is about the size of
Portugal. It was earlier a colony under the French, and is now administered as an overseas
department of France. It is officially a part of France and a member of the EU. The urban
areas of Cayenne and Kourou are comparable to rural France. They have excellent facilities
and a solid infrastructure. The hinterland is not populated as much and development is
also slow in this area. Guiana is known especially as the place from where the Ariane
rockets of the European space agency are launched.
