Quito, the capital
of Ecuador, is the second highest capital of the world. If you fly into the city at night,
it will come up on you suddenly as an oasis of lights against the absolute blackness of
the forested mountains and volcanoes that surround it. Lying within 25km of the equator,
the city is at a height of 2580m making the weather ideal for visitors all year long. You
may find it difficult to adjust to the height of the city, so stick to a slow pace for at
least 24 hours.
Modern Quito has two sections
the old and the new. The Old City hasnt changed much since the colonial days
and the New City bears no marks of the colonial era whatsoever. The Old City is steeped in
brilliant history and the New Quito is all gleaming with its swanky office buildings. Take
time to explore both neither of them will disappoint you!
If you are set on exploring
Ecuador, Quito is the best place to begin. Start with the historic sights of the Old Town
and the citys numerous museums, stake out at the hundreds of shops, cafes and
restaurants and choose from the numerous hikes, excursions and climbs in the vicinity.
