The capital of Colombia,
Bogota is full of splendid colonial churches, brilliant museums, universities, modern
architecture, intellectuals and artists. It is truly representative of all that is
Colombian. On the one hand it has a cerebral facade and on the other it is a city
notorious for beggars, street urchins, drug dealers, vast shantytowns, thieves, wild
traffic and graffiti.
Bogota is full of life ---
busy, vibrant and dangerous. The poorest of the poor live right under the noses of the
rich, and the extreme diversity of lifestyles can leave a sensitive visitor somewhat
uncomfortable. Take it easy for the first 24 hours after you arrive in Bogota - the high
altitude of the city could cause dizziness. It is advisable to go slow on food and
alcoholic drinks till you have adjusted to the altitude.
