Cowboys, outlaws, six-shooter guns - if you close your eyes in Telluride, an old mining town in southwest Colorado, you can recreate a Western movie in your mind, so pervasive is the past here. However, present-day Telluride has an additional attraction - it offers some of the best skiing in the country.

The town's main street boasts of some fine historic buildings still retaining their old-world feel. Beyond the town, the countryside offers a range of diversions : in winter ski down some of the most challenging ski slopes.

Above the town is Mountain Village connected to town by free shuttle service. In summer, go trekking, hiking , cycling or backpacking through the verdant countryside. A popular trek is to Bridal Veils Fall 2 hours away from Telluride. Mountain Village

In earlier times, Telluride was a haven for outlaws -- the name is said to derive from the pithy 'To hell you ride' parting to people foolish enough to venture here. Butch Cassidy is said to have robbed the bank here.

Telluride is a town for all seasons. While skiing is the obvious reason to come here in winter, other times of the year are special too. Thousands come here during the festivals in summer and fall such as premier Bluegrass and County Music festival in late June, the Telluride International Film Festival (early September), the Jazz Celebrations (early August) and the Talking Gourds poetry festival (mid July).

You can fly into Telluride Regional Airport, 2 miles away from the town on shuttle flights from Denver. By car, Telluride is accessible on Highway 145.

Staying in Telluride can be expensive -- prices are generally higher in winter when the ski season is on. However, in summer, prices of rooms during the festivals can skyrocket, making it difficult for the budget traveler. There is a youth hostel and several camping grounds in and around town, especially during the festivals.

Eat to your heart's content at the many restaurants, cafes and delis in Telluride offering inexpensive and tasty fare. If you want to splurge on a sinfully expensive gourmet meal -worry not for Telluride has some surprises up its sleeve -- you can dine at some exclusive restaurants serving the best of food and wine.
