The city's origins make for an interesting story - initially, a small US Army base was set up here in 1820 to check on the Seminole Indians. 1880 marked a turning point -the railroad was extended till Tampa and the Hillsborough River was made into a docking yard for ships. Tampa became an important port and a major cigar-manufacturing center, with many Cubans migrating here to work in this booming industry.

Summers can be hot and humid while spring and fall are pleasant. Sudden showers and thunderstorms can catch you unawares in the months of June- September and temperatures can touch a high of 88° F. Winters are pleasant with the mercury staying in the 70s.
