Frozen custard,
ragtime, the biggest brewery in the world, the tallest monument in the country -- these
are just a few of the things that make charming and cosmopolitan St. Louis a delightful
place! TS Eliot, Chuck Berry, Scott Joplin, Kathleen Turner and Kevin Kline are some of
the illustrious citizens of this culturally well-endowed city. St. Louis has a sizeable
Italian, German and black community as well as Irish and Asian migrants.
In 1764, Pierre Laclede, a
French fur trader established St. Louis as a trading place close to the confluence of the
Mississippi, Missouri and Illinois rivers. The subsequent years saw the settlement
flourish under French and then Spanish rule, imbibing many European features. In 1803, the
Louisiana Purchase deal resulted in many American migrants here and further westward. St.
Louis became a gateway to the west and transportation; both steamboats and railroads
further bolstered its importance. In the 1970, the city, especially downtown went into a
decline but recent renovations are working wonders, signaling a turnaround for this
beautiful River City.
The largest inland trading port in
America, St. Louis combines commerce and culture with effortless grace. The climate
remains pleasant through out the year. Neither too hot in summer nor too cold in winter.
Temperatures fall to zero degrees in the winter accompanied by a little snowfall. In
summer the temperatures hover in the 90s.
