The initial small settlement of Seattle founded on
the Alki Point Peninsula was soon totally submerged under floodwaters. In the 1850s, the
settlement was re-established in Pioneer Square and named after a Native American chief,
Seattle. The original settlers were involved in logging, cutting down the surrounding
forests and sending the wood away. In 1897, due to the Klondike Gold Rush, the city began
expanding and during World War I, became a major shipbuilding center. The twentieth
century heralded an even greater industrial boom -Boeing set up their operations here and
soon became the largest employer. Other major industry players like Microsoft (for
computer software) and Starbucks (for coffee) and a thriving port have made Seattle an
extremely important center for commerce and industry.
Seattle is pleasant the year round. The only
problem is that it rains through out the year with patches of sunshine during. July and
September are relatively drier months with just a handful of rainy days. Summer
temperatures rarely go over the mid 70s and winter temperatures stay in the 40s the
summer. Seattle has a mixed population of Anglo-Saxons, Chinese, Filipino, Japanese,
Korean and Indians. Many are computer professionals attracted by the opportunities in
software development here.
