Corn tortillas and
Navajo blankets are what come to mind when one thinks of Santa Fe. This cosmopolitan city
is a favorite destination of visitors seeking fresh air, in convivial urban surroundings.
One of the oldest cities in America, Santa Fe was founded in 1607 by the Spanish as their
colonial capital. Prior to that, it was surrounded by a large Pueblo settlement dating
back to 2000 years ago. In 1848, the Yankees took over the town. Still retaining its small
town appeal and famed for its adobe architecture, Santa Fe is a major center for the arts
as evident in the large number of art galleries here.
Santa Fe is nestled in a valley formed
by the Rio Grande and contrary to common belief more than just deserts and sombreros. On
the west the city is lined by the Jerez Mountains and on the east are the Rockies. Based
at an elevation of 7000 ft above sea level, this city has four distinct seasons
summer, winter, spring and fall. In spring and summer there is a profusion of wild
flowers, in fall the leaves turn colour and winter brings with it snowfall. With over 300
days of sunshine, the city experiences very pleasant weather in spring, summer and fall.
The summer months have a dry heat that is quite tolerable because of little humidity in
the air. The days are warm and the evenings cool in spring, summer and fall. It rains in
the months of July and August. Average temperatures stay in the lower 40s(F) in winter and
summer temperatures are very pleasant.
