Wonderful place for a
relaxed vacation the city of Mormons - well worth a few days stopover. Shady green
gardens, easygoing attitude and charmingly different people is what Salt Lake City is all
about. It has warm and pleasant summers, and cold winters with snow filled mountains
providing great ski slopes. Over the years, the City has acquired a reputation for being a
center for science and sports -- the 2002 Winter Games are to be held here.
Brigham Young, the Mormon leader, set up the first white settlement here
in 1847. The community flourished, building huge irrigation channels to sustain their
agrarian way of life. By 1850, they were petitioning for their own state. However, the
first few petitions were rejected and statehood was finally achieved in 1896. Salt Lake
City as the capital developed into a powerful religious and commercial center.
Family values are still very strong in this heavily Mormon influenced
city. Mormons make up a large part of the people residing here. The attitude of the people
is easy going and laidback. The Mormons discourage alcohol and drugs that is why
even the beer you get here is only 3% alcohol. You may be able to get coke, coffee or even
a pack of cigarettes, but one has to have a license to be able to serve or drink alcohol
in public.
