If beer is what
cheers you, welcome to Portland, Oregon, the microbrewery capital of the country! Beyond
the beer, relaxing, well laid out and culturally rich Portland has plenty to offer to
visitors. Walk around the leafy parks, catch some great performances in the theaters and
relax over a mug of the local brew in the city's many restaurants. And if you are in the
mood for cross-country travel, take a trip around the surrounding mountain and coast
areas.
Portland was founded in 1845 on the
banks of the River Williamette as the gateway to the Pacific Rim. A coin toss between its
two founders decided the name -- the choice was between Portland and Boston! The town soon
became a major trading port, attracting many to its shores. Elaborate mansions came up as
the city prospered during. However, the downside to this was that Portland acquired a
reputation as a Sin City, infamous for gambling and prostitution. In the twentieth
century, Portland's importance as a port declined with the establishment of newer ports
like Seattle. By the 1970s, the city was in shambles, full of derelict old buildings.
However, in recent times, the city has gone on a salvaging spree -- restoring and
highlighting their historic heritage and building a new image for the city.
