MICHIGAN
CITY
Michigan City
surprisingly is not in the state of Michigan but in Indiana. Located in the northern part
of Indiana, Michigan City is a good base to explore the nearby Indiana Dunes National
Lakeshore as well as Mount Baldy, a giant sand dune. Other attractions here include the
Barker Mansion and Civil Center built in 1905, the former home of freight car millionaire
John H Barker and the Old Lighthouse Museum, built in 1858 and one of the few lighthouses
remaining on the shores of Lake Michigan.
Close to
Michigan City, the Indiana Dunes State Park offers some good beaches as well as hiking and
walking trails. Michigan City is accessible by Amtrak. If you wish to travel by air, fly
into Michiana Regional Transportation Center at South Bend which is forty miles east of
Michigan City. For accommodation, you have a choice between basic inns to heritage hotels.
