In
earlier times, Iowa City was the capital of the state of Iowa. In the mid 19th
century, the capital was shifted to Des Moines, which was more central. However, Iowa City
retains much of its charm and importance and is today home to the University of Iowa. The
gold domed Old Capitol is now part of the University.
| Iowa City is a good place to base oneself to explore the
nearby Amana Colonies, the old German settlements. Founded in 1855 by the
Community of True Inspiration, the colonies are in essence seven villages where people
lived a collective life till 1932. Even today, remnants of the earlier lifestyle are on
view and the entire area is now a National Historic Landmark. |

You can reach Iowa City by car or bus on I-80, the main east-west
thoroughfare in the state. Greyhound Line buses serve the town. There are several chain
and motels as well as inexpensive hostels here and accommodation is not a problem. Food is
cheap and good here -- Italian and Cajun are favored.
