The town itself has nothing
spectacular to offer in terms of sightseeing, but the same however cannot be said of the
journey on the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad that takes you through some of
the most beautiful and dramatic mountain scenery in the world. A round trip lasts for
about eight hours and is not to be missed on any account. The natural beauty of the
surrounding region and the laid-back air of Durango makes for a great, relaxing break.
In 1880, Durango was set up as a rail junction to facilitate the Gold
Rush prospectors. From Durango, a narrow gauge railway line ran to Silverton, the final
destination for the gold seekers.
Summer is a good time to go as it is easy to tour around in the area then. Since winter
sees massive discounts in hotel fares, budget travelers may wish to go then.
Take a flight into the Durango-La Plata County Airport, 14 miles away
from the town. Or hop on to a Greyhound bus. Better still, drive into Durango in your own
car.
There are many hotels, motels and even a youth hostel here. Room rates
are high in summer but come down by half in winter. There are several good reasonably
priced restaurants and cafes here where you can get a hearty meal.
