D A L L A S

Thanks to the Dallas TV show, Dallas city has become a household name, epitomising the ultimate in glitz and glamour. However, Dallas has an unhappy legacy - it is where President John F Kennedy was assassinated in 1963. A major business center, Dallas is spread over a large area and incorporates some of the most striking skyscrapers in the country. In reality, swimming pools and verdant golf courses make it the glitzy city it is – the cowboy and oilmen take a back seat to the fine museums and music halls and one would have to look really hard to witness a gunfight or cattle drive!

This bustling metropolis presents a very smug, sophisticated façade and takes pride in showing off old wealth, but delve a little and you will find that the people haven’t yet totally lost their sense of fun and can really go wild in the bars and clubs of Deep Ellum..

Summers here are hot and in July temperatures soar up to 100 º F the while winters are warm and pleasant in the 50s. Spring and Fall are the pretty seasons when foliage is at it’s most glorious.

Dallas was established in 1841, as a prairie trading post by Mr. Dallas and John Byran, a lawyer from Tennessee. Over the years, entrepreneurs flocked to the town, prospering due to cattle farming and oil prospecting. However, President Kennedy's assassination here in 1963 brought in a period of decline, a trend that continued into the 1980s thanks to overwhelming unemployment and crime. The late 1990s have seen a revival in the city's fortunes.
