Founded in 1788, Cincinnati is named after selfless and honest Roman general who refused to be rewarded for doing his duty. Originally, part of a Native American trade route, Cincinnati grew into a major supply town for settlers using the river to go into the interiors. In 1811 with the arrival of the steamboat, it became a major port. During the Civil War, despite its proximity to the South, Cincinnati sided with the Union forces.

Cincinnati lies across the river from Kentucky and is about three hundred miles from Chicago and Detroit. The city center is in a flat basin surrounded by hills and the placid Ohio River flows by. The waterfront is a pretty area and is the center of activity. Cincinnati has a mixed population with a preponderance of German immigrants who came here during the 1930s.

Summers can get a bit hot and humid here with temperatures touching 86 º F in July and August.. Winters are cold and sudden snowstorms are common. Temperatures drop to a low of 38 º F. Rainfall is common in the spring.
