The Big Sur river valley, north of the
Pfeiffer Beach turn off, is home to the Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. Within the park, is
the 60-ft Pfeiffer Falls. The Henry Miller Library is also in the region and one can buy
his books here.
Though public transportation is available and you could bus it, the best
way one can get to Big Sur is to drive on Highway 1, the most scenic coast-hugging drive
in all of America.
Summer is the best time to visit the region. Winters are a bit tricky as
there are violent storms and the road is often closed as portions get washed away.
Conditions are ideal for camping here in summer and it is a popular destination for
campers and outdoor activists..
Most of the accommodation hotels and motels - in the Big Sur region
is in the valley in an area known as the Village. There are camping grounds in the park
and along the highway. However, because of the heavy rush in summer, it is better to book
rooms in advance.
There are good restaurants in the Village area but food is relatively
expensive. Restaurants serve roast chicken to hamburgers and burritos. One can also buy
packed food at the local grocery stores that are open daily from 8am-10pm.
The local post office is on Route 1 next to the Center Deli in Big Sur
Center and remains open weekdays 8.30am 5pm.
