C O Z U M E L

Cozumel an alluring Caribbean island is the largest inhabited island in Mexico. It was a sleepy, fishing community. But all that changed when scuba divers became fascinated with the island since a Jacques Cousteau documentary on the treasures of the deep was made in 1961. San Gervacio

A very interesting site on the island is San Gervacio. Today it is a park with a restoration project that studies the Mayan culture. Originally this was a sacred place for Maya women to worship Ixchel, the goddess of fertility. One can do a tour of more than 35 Mayan archaeological sites.

Tulum Chichen Itza with its massive pyramids, Tulum, the only Mayan city built overlooking the sea, and Tikal in its lush jungle settings where wild monkeys still can be seen are the high points of this tour.

During the Autumnal Equinox in late September and the Vernal Equinox of late March, visitors come to the main temple at Chichen Itza to see the descent of the serpent Kukulkan. The story goes that the Maya constructed the temple in a way that during equinox a beam of sunlight creates a shadow moving down towards earth resembling a slithering snake. A sighting of this occurrence is said to bring out a good harvest.

Cozumel is famous for its migratory birds, giant sea turtles (which lay their eggs between May and September) undersea life, coral reefs and clear waters. The crystal clear waters offer some marvellous fishing, windsurfing, sailing, jet skiing, water skiing, snorkeling and diving adventures.

From Cozumel, you can make a ferry-trip (of about 40 minutes) to the colourful town of San Miguel. San Miguel is the island’s main attraction. It has a Museum of the Island of Cozumel which displays the island’s wildlife, native vegetation, reefs and undersea critters. The Chankanaab Lagoon & Botanical Gardens is a natural `aquarium’ of about 50 species of fish and a plantation of about 300 types of tropical plants. Further south is the Celarian Lighthouse along with a Mayan ruin that was used as a navigator in those times.

Cozumel can be reached by air. The international airport is 3 km from San Miguel. To get around the island one can use taxis, rented cars or rented bikes. This island can also be reached by a ferry service which runs boats from Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen.

All hotels are located along the western shore of the island. They provide facilities for bars, water sports, tennis courts, discotheques, restaurants, health clubs etc. Dining in the island is an experience in itself. More than 100 restaurants cater to every taste be it Italian, Mediterrenean, American, Carribean and of course Mexican. They have a casual atmosphere and provide a friendly service.

Cozumel has six beaches all ideal for swimming, windsurfing and sunbathing. Outdoor activities includes diving at the Paraiso Reef, Chankanaab Caves and Reef, Santa Rosa Wall, Maracaibo Reef and the Palancar Reef; snorkeling at the Chankanaab Bay, La Ceiba Beach and Playa San Francisco; and fishing for marlin, barracuda, amberjack and sailfish.

You can pick up some exquisite black coral jewelry, pottery, embroidered clothes and glassware while you are in Cozumel. .
