A very interesting site on the island
is San Gervacio. Today it is a park with a restoration project that studies
the Mayan culture. Originally this was a sacred place for Maya women to worship Ixchel,
the goddess of fertility. One can do a tour of more than 35 Mayan archaeological
sites.

Chichen Itza with its massive pyramids, Tulum,
the only Mayan city built overlooking the sea, and Tikal in its lush jungle settings where
wild monkeys still can be seen are the high points of this tour. |
During the Autumnal Equinox in late September and the Vernal Equinox of
late March, visitors come to the main temple at Chichen Itza to see the descent of the
serpent Kukulkan. The story goes that the Maya constructed the temple in a way that during
equinox a beam of sunlight creates a shadow moving down towards earth resembling a
slithering snake. A sighting of this occurrence is said to bring out a good harvest.
