Ciudad Juarez is an
important cultural and commercial center. The city has a refreshing approach to
architecture, combining traditional styles in modern buildings and edifices.
The old town hall built in 1947, has an
interesting mural inside which narrates the history of the founding of Ciudad Juarez. This
mural was painted by Jose Guadalaupe Diaz in 1977. Other interesting places are the Anthropology
and History Museum, the PRONOF Centre, the Juarez Monument, the
Monumental Bullring, the Alberto Balderas Bullring and the Ex-border Customs
Building. A collection of fossils is on display in the Archaeological Museum. On the way
to Zaragoza, 20 km to the east is El Sauzal. It has a fossilized forest
where the trees were covered with sand and converted into stone by the action of the
salts. It also has the remains of a mammoth which were discovered in 1969.
There are two airports that can be used to reach Ciudad Juarez. One is in
Juarez city and the other in El Paso. Both are international airports. This border town is
a 5-hour journey away from Chihuahua. The United States border is not very far away
either. The only formality required is that your papers have to be properly stamped. To
get around the city use taxicabs, trolley buses or go about on foot.
The hotels in Ciudad Juarez provide adequate and comfortable amenities.
But you may be tempted to savour the luxury of a Five Star Hotel in nearby El Paso.
The city is fun to visit. It provides many avenues of enjoyment for
visitors, including many fine restaurants, night clubs, bull fights, soccer games,
traditional rodeos, dog races, polo grounds, golf, car racing, shopping malls and old city
markets. The restaurants serve international as well as genuine Mexican cuisine. Ciudad
Juarez is famous for its handicrafts, especially its Indian blankets or sarapes as they
are called and its glassware.
The events held in Ciudad Juarez are El Dia De La Raza in October and the
Gastronomic Food Show in November.
Most banks are on 16 de Septiembre where money can be exchanged. It is
also possible to change currency at the tourist shops along Juárez and 16 de Septiembre.
The post office lies one block south of 16 de Septiembre, at the corner of Lerdo
and Peña.
