Currency & Costs

The currency in Lebanon is the Lebanese lira (LL), also known locally as the pound. Only notes are in circulation as the coins became obsolete during the war. There are notes of LL 50, 100, 250, 500, 1000, 10,000 and 50,000. As the lira has devalued, most shops, restaurants and hotels accept payment in US dollars.

Lebanon is quite expensive and accommodation is going to be the most expensive part of your trip. Living comfortably would mean spending US$ 80-100 a day. Hotels outside Beirut are a little cheaper. Public transport is inexpensive. The cheapest budget would be about US$ 30 per day if you choose a modest hotel and eat food from street stalls. But if you stay outside Beirut, you can live on US$ 10 a night in a modest hotel.

Banks & Money Changers

Most banks will change US dollars and UK pounds and travellers’ cheques. Moneychangers, who are everywhere, deal with any convertible currency and offer better rates than the banks. For travellers’ cheques, a commission is charged; so do look around for a better deal. Travellers’ cheques and most international credit cards are accepted in the larger establishments and also in several restaurants and shops in Beirut.

Business Guide

Dress formally for meetings and social occasions. Women will find trouser suits more comfortable than skirts. Make appointments for meetings and check to see if they are on schedule. Patience and persistence are two essentials to getting your work done. It is better to avoid referring to the political condition of the country even in passing – the Lebanese are very sensitive on this issue.

Sunday is the end of the week in Lebanon. Government offices including post offices are open Monday to Saturday from 8 am to 2 pm, and on Friday from 8 am to 11am. Banks are open Monday to Saturday from 8.30 am to 12.30 pm.

Shops and private businesses open from 9 am to 6 pm Monday to Saturday. Many grocery stores keep late hours and open on Sunday as well. It is important to remember that some Muslim shops and businesses may remain closed on Fridays.
