| Marmaris situated on a bay backed by
rugged pine clad mountains, is Turkeys premier yachting port. The city is attractive
maritime parkland and is ideal for water sports and sailing. In May, the Marmaris Yacht
Charter Show provides you with an opportunity to meet yacht captains and crew. With plenty
of provisions on board you can set sail in the craft of your choice and languidly explore
the spectacular beauty of southern Turkey. |

The Greek Island of Rhodes is nearby.
There are daily boat trips to Paradise Island, Dalyan and Caunos.
Dalyan is a tiny, tranquil village with restaurants lining the waterways specializing in
delicious meals of fresh fish. High on the cliff face, at a bend in the river, above the
fascinating ancient harbour city of Caunos, magnificent tombs were carved into the rock.
There are sandy beaches rising to hazy mountains at Icmeler, accessible
by mini bus. Visitors stay longer than planned because they find this place irresistible.
Excellent accommodation makes it easier to prolong your tryst with nature. The ancient
port of Knidos, accessible by road or excursion boat, is famous for its
temple dedicated to Aphrodite.
In Marmaris, sample the typical Turkish
cuisine in one of the seafront restaurants and drink raki and anisette, the traditional
Turkish way, over ice and diluted with water. Later stroll along the brightly lit and palm
lined promenade. The perfect way to end the evening is energetic entertainment at a lively
bar or dancing till dawn at a sophisticated disco.
Shopping is a delight in
Marmaris boutiques, colourful bazaars and markets. Excellent leather and suede goods,
copper and brassware, jewelry and objects carved out of onyx. Textiles, Turkish carpets
and embroidery make excellent handcrafted souvenirs. Buy the locally produced pine-scented
honey called cambali its unbelievably good!
Swimmers should not leave
without a visit to the Ataturk Park, to the east of Marmaris, where a shallow beach,
extending to the bay leads to safe waters. The clear sea is warm enough for swimming from
early May until late September. Marmaris also has horseback riding and tennis centres for
the sports enthusiast. This is one of the few places in the world where you can delight in
the heady aroma of the frankincense tree.
The Marmaris otogar (bus center) has frequent direct
buses and minibuses to all places in the region including Antalya, Bodrum, Dalyan, Datca
and Fethiye. Small car ferries run to Rhodes daily except on Sunday in summer. To book
your stay, get in touch with a travel agent. The
Tourist office- Telephone 412 1035; Fax (252) 412 7277. is also helpful in providing
information. Accommodation is available to suit every taste and budget ranging from
