| The third largest city in Sweden,
Malmö is the capital of the county of Skåne and is one of Sweden’s most charming
cities. Lying across the Öresund (The Sound) from Copenhagen in Denmark, Malmö grew
primarily during the Middle Ages, and many of the city’s cobbled streets, parks,
canals and quaint timbered houses date back to the 16th and 17th
centuries. Although it’s an important industrial centre (Malmö’s industries
range from food processing to shipbuilding) and a major transport hub, Malmö has managed
to retain much of its medieval charm. Its marketplaces and its streets are, to a large
extent pedestrianised, and the city’s dotted with old buildings- churches, old
houses, even a castle- which add to the feel of this being an old city.
If you’re coming to Sweden by ferry from Copenhagen, Malmö is likely to be the
first port you’ll see- and what better way to start a tour of Sweden? It’s a
warm, friendly city that will surely win your heart! |
