Bilbao is a port city located in the Basque Autonomous Community of Spain. It’s the largest city in the entire region, and is the capital city of the province known as Vizcaya (Biscay to the outside world), in northern Spain. The city lies near the famous Bay of Biscay, about 11 km inland from the bay, at the mouth of the river Nervíon, and is completely surrounded by green hills.

Bilbao can roughly be divided into two sections: the older half of the city, which lies on the western bank of the Nervíon, and the newer half, which lies on the eastern bank. A little more than a century ago, several satellite towns that lay on the eastern bank of the Nervíon were annexed to the city, forming its modern extension.
