The capital of Malta, Valletta is
also about the only urban settlement in the islands that can qualify, as a city- even
Victoria, the capital of Gozo, is just a town. Valletta itself is pleasantly different
from many other European capitals- old, but not falling apart; and with an atmosphere that
literally breathes history with the honey-coloured walls surrounding the city simply
adding to the feeling of antiquity. Valletta may be old, but it definitely isnt
decrepit; Maltas smartest shopping malls, best hotels and finest restaurants are to
be found in this city, and the fact that it is so much the commercial and cultural centre
of the tiny country means that most itineraries feature Valletta as the base for
sightseeing and tours.
