After the fall of the
Berlin Wall in 1989, Nicosia earned the unfortunate distinction of being the only divided
capital in the world today. The UN enforced Green Line separates Northern Nicosia (also
called Lefkosia) from the Greek section of southern Nicosia.
You will have to choose between the Gothic mosques of the North and the
Byzantine structures of the South. Although you can cross the Line from South to North for
a day trip, you will still have to experience the city in disjointed fragments.
Despite the unfortunate division and tensions resident in the city, there is much history
and beautiful architecture to be experienced in the capital.
