Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, is an
old city that has successfully warded off the ravages of time. Like an elegant old lady,
it wears its age well. While Zagreb may not be as picture-perfect as some of the other
cities of East Europe, and its recent travails may not exactly lure in travellers, but is
a charming city and a pleasure to visit. The city is broadly divided into three parts: the
older quarters of Gradec and Kaptol, and the new sector of Donji Grad (`Lower Town)-
each section has interesting medieval architecture, bustling markets and streets, and a
vibrant, sparkling atmosphere which is quite infectious. Spend just a day or so wandering
through the sights of the town, wending your way through its markets, or attending a
concert at one of its many venues Zagreb will live up to its promise.
