Vitality
bordering on chaos - this is Belize City. Cars almost chasing you off the narrow roads onto
non existent pavements, buildings that rock unsteadily on their foundations, fruit sellers
and the like shouting to catch your attention, canals filled with sewage water snaking
their way through the city. The city possesses an energy that leaves you breathless.
Scared off by reports of drug peddlers and crime, few stop to enjoy this lively city with
its quaint Caribbean charm and easygoing atmosphere. Most travellers use it only as a
transit point to the rest of Belize. The city has never quite
recovered from the devastating hurricane of 1961, Hurricane Hattie. The massive damage by
the hurricane forced the government to change the capital of Belize from Belize City to
Belmopan. Dont let the unorganised look of the City put you off, as this is a place
that you may enjoy visiting.
