With Mount Chance spluttering in the background, Montserrat is not a destination
to plan a quiet Caribbean holiday. In 1995, the Soufriere Hills Volcano sparked into life,
destroying much of the island and its population. Today the population of the island
barely totals 6000 people.
The capital city of Plymouth was totally destroyed during the eruption and today
a mound of ash and dust marks the capital. The unpredictability of the volcano, strikes
Montserrat off the travel itinerary. There are no facilities for tourism though it was one
of the main sectors of the economy pre-1995.
