Mutiny on the high seas married up
with the innocence, charm and romance of the South Sea Islands to make the Pitcairn
Islands familiar to moviegoers and bookworms the world over.
Many have travelled to the islands
through the pages of The Mutiny on the Bounty but few actually get there. The
Pitcairn Islands are amongst the most remote in the world - they lie approximately halfway
(4800 km) between New Zealand and the Americas. And to their south lie the polar icecaps
of Antarctica. Its definitely not a destination for the squeamish travelers but that
doesnt mean people dont go there.
It can be quite a
task getting there but when there's a will, theres always a way! And for the
intrepid traveller, the Pitcairns promise an exotic vacation. Volcanoes, cliffs and rugged
coastline make Pitcairn (3km x 1.5km) a small but stunning island. A few islands here and
there make up the sum total of the country, once the choice destination for runaway
outlaws and law-abiding Polynesians with wanderlust! There are no international airlines
headed there so the more innovative your travel techniques the more likely you are able to
get there. So pack your bags, and good luck.
