Sumatra,
Indonesias second largest island, stretches right across the
equator, and is so diverse that sometimes its hard to believe that
so much variety could be squeezed into such a small area. Sumatra
actually has it all- wide rivers, gushing waterfalls, volcanoes (many
still active), and dense rainforests. The forests, are among
Sumatras most outstanding features- they harbour some of the most
rare species of plant and animal life on the planet, such as the huge
Rafflesia, the largest flower on earth, and the endangered Sumatran
rhino. Sumatra is a truly fascinating place- its history, its
multicultural society, and its amazing natural beauty are reason
enough for its popularity as a tourist destination.
The
capital of North Sumatra, Medan, is Indonesias second largest city
and is the main gateway to the island. Its a busy, vibrant and
crowded port town, and like the rest of the island, has a little bit
of everything- grandeur, shabbiness, natural beauty and history.
Despite
its wealth of natural resources, Sumatra is struggling to deal with
the economic crisis the entire country is facing. Add to that, the
ethnic riots between Christians and Muslims in the northern province
of Aceh; all in all it hasnt been a good time for Indonesias
international image. But despite a measure of political stability, the
situation remains volatile and the economic situation grim. If you are
planning a trip to Sumatra in the near future, it would be wise to
contact your embassy and get the latest update on the security
situation.
