Set amidst green, wooded hills, Mount Abu is
Rajasthan's only hillstation, and the perfect destination for those who like sleepy,
relaxed holidays. Small, quiet and deliciously cool, Mt Abu usually inundated by weekend
crowds, Gujarati honeymooners and pilgrims- but finding a little bit of solitude amidst
the crowd is never a problem. Fortunately for those who can't imagine a holiday without a
bit of sightseeing thrown in, Mount Abu offers a few attractions to choose from- few, but
adequate. Go boating on the pretty Nakki Lake, or go strolling along the
many paths that wend their way through the hills, offering some of the most spectacular
views around. |
You can, if you're of a romantic bent of
mind, make your way to the inevitable Honeymoon Point- be prepared
to be surrounded by starry-eyed couples! But- the attraction in Mount Abu is the
architectural wonder known as the Dilwara Temples. One of the most
splendid temple complexes anywhere in India, the Jain Dilwara temples are carved entirely
from white marble- two of the temples, the Vimal Vasahi (built in 1031,
the oldest in the complex) and the Tejpal Temple (built in 1231), are
especially exquisite and will leave you spell bound. The carving here is so intricate and
delicate that they appear to be made out of ivory rather than marble!
Drink in loads of clean, cool air. Feast your eyes on greenery, trail a hand in the
refreshingly cool water of the lake. Take a breather- head for Mount Abu. Getting to Mt Abu
