China
symbolises many things to many people. Kung fu. Ming vases. Silk. Tea. Classic
cuisine. Confucius. Chairman Mao. Paper. Pagodas. Pandas. Paintings. Porcelain. The Great
Wall - the only man-made structure that can be seen from the moon. China
represents all that and much, much more. The third largest country in the world in
terms of sheer size and also the country with the
largest population in the world, China has for a very long time played a pivotal role in
the development of civilisation.

Civilisation
may actually be said to have `dawned' (a grandiose term but singularly appropriate
here) in China. Gunpowder was invented here, as was paper money. Chinese
art, Chinese medicine, Chinese fabrics - are all admired the world over. Chinese tea,
silk, noodles, tai-chi, acupuncture, feng-shui have been exported to all corners of the
globe. And with its secrets finally beginning to open up to tourism, China itself is fast
becoming an attractive destination. |
