Currency & Costs

The local currency is known as the Ugandan shilling. There are no restrictions on currency exchange, though the import and export of local currency is prohibited. Foreign currency can be imported freely on declaration at the airport, but it is advisable to obtain a currency declaration form on arrival in Uganda. Unspent shillings can be converted into a foreign currency at the time of departure.

Banks & Money Changers

Banking hours are 9am to 3pm Monday through Friday, and 9am to 12 noon on Saturdays. The commercial banks work 8:30am to 2pm Monday to Friday. Private banks are open on Saturdays too from 8:30am to 5pm. There is a bank at Entebbe International Airport for incoming and outgoing passengers.

You require a valid passport to change travellers’ cheques. It is important to remember that notes in small denominations are changed at reduced rates – the difference can sometimes be up to 5%. Licensed forex bureaus are found in all major cities, especially the capital city, Kampala. It makes a lot of sense to exchange a substantial amount of currency before you are travel to non-urban areas. Credit cards are accepted in the major cities only. ATM facility is available in limited banks and outlets.

Business Guide

English is the language used for business discussion and business suits and ties are best worn for meetings and during office hours. Business hours commence at 0830 and finish at 1700 Monday through Friday. Appointments should always be made.
