MAURITIUS
Beach at Mauritius Honeymoon in Mauritius – marooned on a vibrant tropical island in the Indian Ocean with endless white sandy beaches and about a hundred shades of blue in the seas. All around you is the most spectacular scenery - miles of lush sugarcane plantations, mystical mountains, cascading waterfalls and rainforests fringed by coniferous trees and casuarinas. Mauritius, once the home of the now extinct dodo, has the most amazing wildlife, including some brilliantly hued birds that you can admire at the game parks. Port Louis, the bustling capital with its swanky waterfront, and the neighbouring town of Mahebourg are great places to relax and get into the spirit of this fascinating land, a potpourri of cultures, colourful traditions and festivals.

If you are looking for a bit of action, head to Tamarin for surfing; Mt Limon and Mt Malartic for hiking, the area around Port Mathurin for coastal hiking; Rodrigues for the best diving opportunities; and Caverne Patate for caving. Or just let your hair down, laze on the beaches, and party into the wee hours of the morning on trendy beach resorts like Grand Baie, Trou aux Biches, Mon Choisy, St Francois, Trou d’ Argent and Petit Gravier or the less touristy area of Pereyebere. We’re sure you will want to be marooned in Mauritius all over again!

Travel docs
To enter Mauritius, you need a visa unless you are a national of a Commonwealth country, the EU, Japan or USA. Always check updated visa requirements prior to travel.

Getting there
Mauritius is well connected by international air carriers and shipping companies. There are several monthly shipping services between Mauritius and Reunion - contact the Mauritius Shipping Corporation in Port Louis.

Getting around
The national carrier, Air Mauritius, operates daily flights to Rodrigues Island. There are several tour operators and car rental agencies. Buses are slow moving while taxis, though easily available, are expensive, especially after dark. Negotiate the fares before starting. Another alternative to taxis in places like Grand Baie is to rent a motorbike or bicycles — a great way to soak in local colour. Boats can be rented in Mauritius at major tourist hotspots.

Best season
Mauritius has typical coastal tropical climate; there are no extremes of temperature. Winter, from July to September, when humidity and heat are lower, is the best time to visit. Tropical rains are likely from January to April, when you can romance indoors. For diving enthusiasts, the clearest waters are between December and March; surfers are advised to go between June and August; while anglers will be delighted at the big game fishing available from October to April.

Accommodation
There is quite a range of accommodation in Mauritius, and you can choose from world-class luxury beach hotels to smaller hotels and pensions de familie—boarding houses. Tariffs range from a low of US$20-30 for economy rooms, to US$300 and above for luxury resorts.
